Is admission to Oxbridge and the Ivy League harder than ever before?

EACH year, students await a single life-changing word in their inbox, “Congratulations”, from some of the world’s most prestigious universities in the United Kingdom and the Ivy League in the United States.

The Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, collectively known as Oxbridge, are among the most selective institutions globally, with 2024 international acceptance rates of just 7.6% and 11.1% respectively, based on UniAdmissions.

Similarly, Ivy League universities are internationally recognised for academic excellence, with admission rates for international applicants typically as low as 1% to 5%, reflecting their highly competitive nature.

Entry into these institutions depends on more than academic performance alone. Applicants are also expected to demonstrate meaningful supercurricular engagement, intellectual curiosity, and a strong sense of character throughout a highly selective interview process.

In recent years, an increasing number of Malaysian students have secured places at these universities. While admission remains highly competitive and challenging, this trend reflects the rising calibre of Malaysian students and the strengthening of local education.

Despite this progress, offers remain limited relative to the global applicant pool, and greater visibility has simply made these successes appear more frequent than they are.

This highlights the growing strength of Malaysian talent, with students now competing confidently on the international stage. Institutions such as Sunway College have played a significant role in this development, recently celebrating eight students who received Oxbridge offers and further reinforcing this progress through recognition at the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards.

While student effort and determination remain vital, the support of strong institutions and dedicated educators is equally important in shaping these outcomes.

Ooi Jin Ming, currently studying at the University of Oxford and alumnus of Sunway College’s Cambridge GCE A-Level programme, shared, “Beyond the deeply dedicated lecturers at Sunway College, my classmates and friends have been an essential part of my journey. Sunway has brought together passionate individuals with diverse interests, and engaging with them has helped me develop the collaborative mindset that top universities value.”

A conducive academic environment is essential in developing students who strive for excellence. At Sunway College, the ecosystem is structured to support sustained student growth and performance, reflected in the consistent achievements of its student body.

“It is a source of great pride to see Sunway College students reach the highest levels and receive offers from Oxbridge and the Ivy League.

“We believe that our students’ determination, combined with the quality of teaching at Sunway College, plays a key role in shaping capable young individuals who will contribute to nation-building,” said Sunway College Cambridge GCE A-Level programme director Ruth Cheah.

Student Khow Jin Xen is a testament to the strength of Sunway College’s academic ecosystem, standing as the only Malaysian to be offered a place at Harvard University this year, accompanied by a 90% financial grant.

In addition, the 17-year-old has received offers from Yale University, Princeton University, Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of California, Los Angeles, the University of California, San Diego, the University of California, Santa Barbara, Imperial College London, University College London, the University of Warwick and the University of Bath.

What sets students like Khow apart is not only academic excellence but also a forward-thinking mindset developed through sustained supercurricular engagement, supported throughout their academic journey at Sunway College.

“I have no regrets about choosing Sunway College. The scholarships offered are unparalleled compared to other institutions, and the extensive experience of the teaching faculty was a decisive factor for me.

“Being taught by lecturers with decades of experience truly makes a difference, and the quality of teaching reflects that expertise,” he said.

He is also involved in education-focused initiatives such as Amiso (Malaysia in the International Science Olympiads) and The Olympiad Initiative, a series of guides supporting Malaysian students participating in Science Olympiads, reflecting his broader commitment to improving access to educational opportunities.

He advises aspiring applicants to trust the process.

“Malaysian students are often far more resilient and capable than they may initially believe.”

He added, “While I would have liked to see more Malaysian students receive offers this year from Harvard, I am very proud of my own admission, not for personal gain, but for what it represents to students across Malaysia who lack the confidence to apply. It is entirely possible when you set your mind to it.”

Ultimately, admissions to the world’s most prestigious universities remain highly competitive, requiring far more than examination results alone. Sunway College has played a meaningful role in this progress, consistently nurturing a growing number of high-achieving students despite the rigour of the admissions process.

While students may pursue different tertiary pathways, Sunway College’s quality education is reflected in all its students, serving as a passport to the world.
