New school in Kulai set to ease overcrowding issues

KULAI: A new primary school with a capacity for about 1,260 pupils will open here soon to ease overcrowding at existing schools in the surrounding area, says Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh.

He said SK Bandar Putra 2, which is the 76th school in Kulai, would help accommodate the population growth in Kulai.

“The construction of the school, which cost about RM35.6mil, began in August 2021. It was completed at the end of last year.

“Currently, we are in the final stages of preparations before the opening,” he told reporters yesterday after visiting SK Bandar Putra 2 yesterday.

Also present was Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching, who is Deputy Communications Minister.

Wong said the school in its first year would be accepting pupils for Year Two, Three and Five.

It has 36 classrooms and three preschool classes.

“The school also has two other classrooms for Special Education Integration Programme (PPKI) pupils.

“One of the three preschool classes will also be for PPKI.”

Wong said the school could take in pupils from SK Bandar Putra and SK Putra Utama.

“We will have engagement sessions with parents from these two schools to hear their views. They can choose whether to send their children to the new school or remain at their current schools,” he said.

With the establishment of the school, the number of pupils at SK Bandar Putra is expected to be reduced from 2,165 to 1,042, while SK Putra Utama will see a drop from 1,302 to 1,177, subject to the parents’ decisions.

“Although the school has yet to begin operations, it has already received a positive response, with enrolment for Year One in 2027 exceeding 230 pupils,” Wong added.
