KUALA LUMPUR: Police are investigating 12 officers for allegedly extorting RM2mil from a foreign national.
It is learnt that the victim was released after paying US$140,000 (RM572,669) to the suspects.
The victim later lodged a report at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters.
The police report subsequently sparked an internal investigation into the matter.
Sources said the group had allegedly demanded RM2mil from the victim, but he managed to pay only a portion of the amount requested.
When contacted, Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Sazalee Adam confirmed the case.
ACP Sazalee said further details will be provided as the investigation progresses.
