Customs seize alcoholic drinks worth RM1.29mil at Labuan port

KOTA KINABALU: Alcoholic beverages worth over RM1.29mil was seized following a raid on three cargo containers in Labuan recently.

During the raid at the Merdeka Port, Customs Department officials inspected three containers and found that the amount stated in documentation differed from the actual items.

Labuan Customs Department director Aspalila Ag Tuah said at a press conference on Tuesday (Apr 21) that the company's documents showed a permitted import quota of 250,000 litres.

However, the total volume found inside was 52,746.24 litres.

She said while the import licence for alcoholic beverages was valid, the company had exceeded the permitted quota. The total value seized was about RM1.29mil, including RM948,168.61 in taxes.

Aspalila said the import and regulation of alcoholic beverages are stipulated under the Customs Regulations 2019. The case is being investigated under the Customs Act 1967.

She urged the public to share information on smuggling activities with the department for immediate action. This includes cases involving cigarettes, alcohol, fireworks, drugs and vehicles.

"Any information can be shared via the Customs toll-free number at 1-800-88-8855 or any of the nearest Customs offices. Identities of informers or whistleblowers will be kept confidential," she assured.
