Govt move to strengthen foreign worker recruitment can curb illegal agents, says business group

PETALING JAYA: The government’s move to strengthen the foreign worker recruitment system is seen as an important step in curbing the involvement of illegal agents who have long exploited both employers and foreign workers.

Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia (DPMM) president Norsyahrin Hamidon said the initiative by the Human Resources Ministry, led by Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Ramanan Ramakrishnan, is also in line with industry needs.

He said the system, which is more transparent, simplified and centralised, would not only streamline the recruitment process from source countries, but also enhance overall integrity and efficiency.

"The initiative also helps close gaps for unethical practices within the current system while boosting industry confidence in the recruitment mechanism.

“This approach is an important step in curbing the involvement of illegal agents who have long taken advantage of employers and foreign workers,” he said in a statement on Thursday (April 16).

DPMM also expressed its commitment to work closely with the government to ensure the successful implementation of the system.
