MCMC probes five for spreading false info on fuel price hike

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating five people suspected of disseminating false information regarding the increase in petrol and diesel prices on Threads.

It said that three of the five have been called up to have their statements recorded for investigation purposes.

"Following further review, Buletin TV3 has issued a denial on the publication of the content that was edited using their visual identity," MCMC said in a statement.

In a related development, the MCMC said it also received a complaint from Buletin TV3 that the fake content, which has gone viral, was from a third party.

The investigation is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment for up to two years or both upon conviction.

The MCMC emphasised that it takes a serious view of any misuse of social media platforms for the purpose of misleading the public through the dissemination of false information.

"Stern action will be taken against any individual found to have violated existing laws,” it added.

It reminded the public to use social media responsibly and not misuse communication facilities to the extent that it could affect community harmony and public order. – Bernama
