Fire at Kayu Madang landfill contained

KOTA KINABALU: A fire at the Kayu Madang landfill in Telipok was brought under control early Tuesday (March 31), preventing it from spreading across a large tyre dump area.

The blaze, reported at about 12.15am, affected roughly three acres of discarded tyres. Firefighters from the Tuaran Fire and Rescue Station, assisted by teams from Kota Kinabalu and Lintas, extinguished the flames.

Tuaran Fire Station chief Kurong Ak Beki said heavy machinery was used to create fire breaks around the burning tyres, while multiple hose lines and water tankers were deployed. The fire was brought under control by 5.32am.

Firefighters are continuing to monitor the site with Kota Kinabalu City Hall officials.

The Kayu Madang landfill has experienced recurring fires, including a major tyre blaze on March 14, 2024, that burned for nearly a week and several smaller subsequent outbreaks, some believed to have been deliberately started.
