The five men, together with another suspect still at large, are accused of murdering SK Kerisnan, 18, near the Sri Subramaniar Temple on Jalan Perpaduan Southward between 1am and 4am on May 12.

No plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

Those convicted could face the death penalty, or up to 40 years’ jail and at least 12 strokes of the cane.

No bail was offered, with case mention set for July 20 pending a post-mortem report.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Muhammad Najib Hamzah had said on Tuesday (May 19) that a youth was found unconscious in a car and pronounced dead at the scene last week.

The death was believed to be the result of a dispute linked to cable theft activities, he added.

ACP Najib said six men were initially arrested, with one of them turning witness for the prosecution after he was found not directly involved in the incident.
