IPOH: Police have arrested a man suspected of posing as a customer to steal a gold chain valued at RM36,500 from a jewellery store in Batu Kurau, Perak.
Selama District Police Chief Superintendent Ramzi Mahmudin confirmed the arrest was made in the early hours of Friday (Sept 4), less than 24 hours after the shop owner lodged an official police report on Thursday (Sept 3).
Investigators revealed that the suspect had visited the jewellery shop twice, on Sept 2 and Sept 3, to conduct surveillance prior to committing the theft.
Following his arrest, the suspect was placed under a four-day remand order running from Sept 4 to Sept 7. The case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft in a building, an offence that carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years' imprisonment and a fine.
"Police conducted further investigations with assistance from the D7 (Secret Societies, Gambling and Vice) division of the Penang Contingent Police Headquarters, leading to the seizure of several items linked to the case," Supt Ramzi said in a statement on Saturday (Sept 5).
Police have urged all commercial premises, particularly high-value retailers such as jewellery shops, to maintain high vigilance and ensure their security infrastructure, including high-definition closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems, remains fully operational.
