Man loses RM2,450 in Facebook Marketplace motorcycle scam

KUALA LUMPUR: A man was duped by a fake Facebook Marketplace posting after discovering that the money he paid had been transferred to accounts unrelated to the purported seller.

Wangsa Maju OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Lazim Ismail said in a statement on Sunday (March 15) that the victim told police he had come across an advertisement for a motorcycle on March 12.

He then communicated with the seller and made payments into two separate bank accounts before being instructed to meet in person to finalise the deal.

"However, when the complainant intended to take the motorcycle home, the seller claimed he had not received any payment, stating that the accounts which received the funds were unrelated and unknown to him. The complainant suffered a loss of RM2,450," he said.

He added that the motorcycle's seller has also filed a police report.

"The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, and investigations are ongoing," he said.
