Penang Education Dept probing claim teacher caned Year Two pupil

KEPALA BATAS: The Penang Education Department is investigating allegations that a Year Two pupil was caned by a teacher, resulting in bruising and swelling of the child's fingers.

The incident, which went viral on social media since on Thursday (March 12), is believed to involve a pupil from a school in Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) here.

Penang Education director Mohamad Dziauddin Mat Saad said the SPU education office is conducting a thorough investigation and is still awaiting a full report.

"I am still waiting for the report. A meeting with the child's next-of-kin has been scheduled to obtain further details and provide an explanation of the action taken by the school.

"The Education Department will study the full report before taking appropriate follow-up action," he said when contacted by Bernama on Friday (March 13).

Mohamad Dziauddin said the pupil involved would also be referred to a guidance and counselling teacher.

A woman claimed on Facebook that her son was hit with a wooden ruler for forgetting to complete his homework.

She alleged a wooden ruler was used, causing her son's fingers to swell, adding that he complained of pain when he got home from school. – Bernama
