Sandakan landslide: Sabah govt to give RM10,000 in cash aid to victim's family


KOTA KINABALU: The State Government will provide RM10,000 in cash assistance to the family of the elderly man who was killed in a landslide in Sandakan early Wednesday (Mar 12).

State Home Affairs and Research Unit secretary Datuk Awang Shahminan Sahari said Sandakan Municipal Council President Walter Kenson has been instructed to locate the victim's next of kin to handover the assistance as soon as possible.

The victim, identified as Agustine J Lingam, 76, was reportedly trying to start the generator of a hotel close to a hill slope, which gave way, burying him.

The incident was confirmed by Sandakan Fire and Rescue Chief Jimmy Lagung.

Meanwhile, the Sabah State Disaster Command Centre, as of 12pm on Wednesday (Mar 11), recorded 1,306 people affected by flooding in Kota Marudu, Paitan and Pitas, involving 40 villages.
