Mutiara Line LRT: Penang govt prioritising land, resident resettlement issues

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang state government is paying special attention to land-related issues and the resettlement of residents involved in the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said works at the project site have been progressing smoothly according to schedule.

"All the work carried out is on schedule... At this stage... we are focusing on land and resettlement issues." Chow said during a press conference at the Penang Women Chamber of Commerce (PWCC) Chinese New Year and Women's Day Celebrations on Monday (March 9).

"Aspects related to land and resettlement of residents are the responsibility of the state government.

"Other matters such as engineering and contracts are under the jurisdiction of Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT) and the appointed contractors," he added.

Chow said so far, 12 houses in the Sungai Dua area are involved in the relocation process

''Specifically, when it comes to Sungai Dua, there are not many houses involved.

"This is because the line enters a village near the Sungai Dua Road Transport Department,'' he said.

The Mutiara Line, which began construction in 2025, is expected to be operational by December 2031.

It will span 29.67km with 20 stations and two provisional stations.
