Committee backs stern action against religious provocation, online and offline

PETALING JAYA: The Interfaith Harmony Committee, which brings together scholars and religious representatives from different religions and faiths in Malaysia, has voiced serious concern over ongoing religious polemics that have sparked public unease.

In a statement Monday (March 2), the committee unanimously called on all parties to immediately cease any form of religious polemics or provocation, and to refrain from touching on sensitive matters involving religion, race and the monarchy (3R)

“These issues must not be trivialised or manipulated for any interest whatsoever, as they will only invite tension and damage the harmony that has long been built in this country,” they said.

The committee stressed that it takes a firm and uncompromising stand against any form of provocation, insult, mockery or belittlement of religion by any individual or group.

Such actions, it said, not only incite hatred and prejudice but also have the potential to undermine national unity and stability.

The committee pledged its full support for enforcement action by the authorities, particularly the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), against any individual or party found to have committed religious provocation, in accordance with existing laws.

“Approaches that incite hatred and division must be rejected entirely,” they said.

It emphasised that Malaysia’s religious diversity is a strength and a foundation of the nation’s stability.

They cautioned against jeopardising the peace the country currently enjoys due to emotions, misunderstandings or differences of opinion that should instead be resolved maturely, prudently and in accordance with the law.

The committee also urged all parties to return to the negotiating table and engage in constructive discussions.

“Every issue has a solution if handled with wisdom and a sense of responsibility.

“Let us strengthen the values of togetherness, mutual understanding, respect, acceptance and the celebration of differences as the foundation of our society,” they said.
