JOHOR BARU: Police have received a report regarding fake videos allegedly using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to imitate His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.
Johor police chief Comm Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the report was lodged on Wednesday (Feb 25) from an individual who had viewed the content on TikTok.
“The video showed the image of His Majesty apparently informing the public that financial assistance would be given.
“Initial investigations found that the TikTok profile was believed to be fake and created to upload the AI-generated video to deceive the public and indirectly tarnish the image of the royal institution,” he said in a statement on Thursday (Feb 26).
Comm Ab Rahaman said police believe there are other accounts created using the same modus operandi, misusing AI technology against individuals or high-profile personalities to gain public trust.
Those found uploading such content could be investigated under Section 420/511 of the Penal Code for attempted cheating and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities.
He said so far, no victims have been identified and no financial losses have been reported.
“The public should always refer to official channels such as the palace and the Johor state government for accurate information,” he added.
He said the Johor police are working closely with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to identify the account owners involved and take appropriate action, including removing the content immediately.
The Johor Royal Press Office reportedly detected several scam video accounts on TikTok using AI technology to imitate the voice of His Majesty.
In a post shared on the official Facebook page of Sultan Ibrahim, it said the content from the accounts featured a voice resembling His Majesty’s, allegedly linked to claims of financial assistance for the public in conjunction with Ramadan.
