Saleswoman loses nearly RM300,000 to investment scam

KUALA TERENGGANU: A women's clothing saleswoman lost RM290,910 after falling victim to an investment scam syndicate.

Kuala Terengganu police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said the 61-year-old woman came across an online investment advertisement on Facebook in May.

He said the victim was attracted by the investment package, which required only a low initial capital but promised lucrative returns within three hours.

"The victim, lured by the attractive offer, made several capital payments and was informed that the investment had generated profits.

"However, she was told that additional payments were required to cover management costs before the profits could be released.

"Even after making the payments, the victim failed to receive the promised returns. She was then deceived by another suspect posing as a police officer, who claimed to be able to help recover the investment funds," he said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 2).

Azli said the victim, desperate to recover both her investment and the promised profits, continued making payments without thinking carefully to another suspect who claimed to be an expert in handling online fraud cases.

Overall, the victim made 16 payments into 16 different bank accounts between June 14 and July 31, using her savings and proceeds from pawning her jewellery.

"After realising she had been scammed, the victim lodged a police report at 12.59 pm yesterday. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code," he said. - Bernama
