MELAKA: A Muslim candidate’s historic breakthrough in American politics has shown that race and religion need not stand in the way of political success, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister pointed to Democrat Abdul El-Sayed’s victory in Michigan, where he became the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate, as an example of how voters could overcome racial prejudice and religious discrimination.
“They understand democracy. They reject racism. Those who recently defeated (President Donald) Trump in America are groups that reject racism.
“When racism rises, Muslims and minorities are the ones who lose out,” he said at the Jelajah Aspirasi Madani programme in Taman Bukit Rambai here on Thursday (Nov 5).
Anwar also highlighted the presence of Muslim politicians from immigrant backgrounds in American politics, citing Somali-born Ilhan Omar alongside representatives of Arab and Palestinian descent.
“Ilhan Omar was born in Somalia and is now a representative in America.
“They campaigned against racism and religious oppression, bringing a new message,” he said.
However, Anwar stressed that Malaysia should draw lessons from such developments without attempting to replicate the American political system.
“We do not need to follow America. We do not want to become America.
“I want Malaysia to be prosperous. I want Malays and Muslims to set a good example.
“Malay leaders who do not steal, who are not corrupt, who look after the people and who care about their welfare. That is what we want,” he said.
