KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman has confirmed that an investigation has been launched into an article published by Bloomberg.com, which allegedly contains defamatory statements against Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Comm Datuk M. Kumar said a police report was lodged on Friday (Feb 13) regarding the publication.

Comm Kumar said investigations are being conducted by the CID's Special Investigation Unit

"The case is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation, which carries a jail term of up to two years, or a fine, or both upon conviction.

"It is also being probed under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities or network services, which provides for a fine of up to RM500,000, or imprisonment of up to two years, or both," he said in a statement.

Comm Kumar urged the public not to speculate on the matter while police complete their probe, in line with the principles of criminal justice in the country.
