Centralised meter house project pays off, says Sabah’s power company

SEMPORNA: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd’s first centralised meter house project is close to paying for itself, says its chief executive officer, Datuk Mohd Yaakob Jaafar.

“So far, we have recovered about RM220,000 in losses and are close to breaking even, with the project costing RM260,000. Without this initiative, the same losses would continue every month,” he said during a site visit to Kampung Selamat on Wednesday (Feb 11).

Completed on Aug 7, 2025, the centralised meter house supplies regulated electricity to 54 houses in a settlement of more than 500 homes.

Mohd Yaakob said the company is seeking approval from the municipal and district councils, as well as the state Local Government, to extend the supply.

Two more settlements have been identified for similar projects: Kampung Delima in Kota Kinabalu and Kampung Boggaya in Sandakan.

He added that the system has been designed to be relocatable should the settlement be cleared in future.

Since the project began operating, supply disruptions in the surrounding area have declined from 87 in 2024 to 32 in 2025, while the System Average Interruption Duration Index has fallen from 3.25 minutes per user to 1.62 minutes per user.

About RM266,000 was invested in the pilot project, which took roughly a year to complete.
