JOHOR BARU: A 25-year-old local man arrested over the alleged robbery and assault of two Rohingya men in Taman Perling here will be charged with four offences on Thursday (Sept 17).
Johor police chief Comm Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the prosecution would involve three counts of robbery and one count of voluntarily causing hurt.
He said the investigation papers had been completed and referred to the Johor Deputy Public Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday (Sept 15), following the man’s arrest on Sept 11.
“The prosecution has directed that three charges be brought under Section 392 of the Penal Code for robbery,” he said here on Tuesday (Sept 15).
Comm Ab Rahaman added that the suspect will also face one charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.
The charges are believed to stem from two separate incidents on Sept 9 and 10 involving two Rohingya men, aged 25 and 35, in Taman Perling.
In the first incident, the suspect allegedly stopped a 25-year-old man who was riding a motorcycle while looking for grass-cutting jobs, before demanding and taking his UNHCR card and grass-cutting machine.
In the second incident, the suspect allegedly stopped another man riding a motorcycle nearby and demanded his UNHCR card.
An argument reportedly broke out, during which the suspect allegedly punched and threatened the victim before leaving the scene.
Comm Ab Rahaman previously said police arrested the suspect at about 5.40pm on Sept 11 in Taman Perling.
Police also seized a grass-cutting machine, motorcycle key, a set of clothes, a parang and a UNHCR card.
Checks found that the suspect had one previous criminal record, while his initial urine screening was negative.
Comm Ab Rahaman said the suspect would be charged at the Johor Baru Sessions and Magistrate’s Courts on Thursday.
He also advised the public against making speculation or comments that could interfere with the legal process.
“Johor police welcome the public’s cooperation in continuing to channel information related to criminal activities to the nearest police station,” he said.
