Sabah GOF drills war strategies in month-long Lahad Datu sea combat exercise


KOTA KINABALU: War strategies are among the focus areas of a month-long, high-intensity training conducted by the Sabah General Operations Force (GOF) in Lahad Datu.

The Sabah Sea Combat 2026 training, involving 42 personnel, started on Jan 19 and is scheduled to conclude on Feb 13, said Sabah GOF commander SAC Nor Omar Sappi.

He said this during a briefing for the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah, Tun Musa Aman, at Istana Negeri on Monday (Feb 9).

During the meeting, he also informed Musa of the importance of this training, which is designed to ensure that GOF personnel remain prepared and vigilant to address any threat to the nation.

Nor Omar said security threats in Sabah continue to be challenging, especially in the state’s coastal areas, which pose strategic risks due to complex geographical factors.

“This programme is set to be held annually to increase skills, strategies and level of capabilities among the GOF force, more so in tackling coastal security threats,” he added.

He said this training is expected to be closed at Patai Payang, Lahad Datu, by the Inspector General of Police.

Aside from security briefings, this courtesy call to Musa was for Nor Omar to formally introduce himself after he was appointed the new Sabah GOF chief over four months ago.
