No decision on CM candidate ahead of GE16, says Penang DAP chief

GEORGE TOWN: No decision has been made on who will be the candidate for the Penang Chief Minister's position after the 16th General Election (GE16), says Steven Sim.

The state DAP chairman said what is important now is to win the people's mandate first before jostling for any positions.

"The party has always been clear that positions are not the reason for members to join DAP, and the party has not made any decision on who will be the Chief Minister.

"What is clear is that our focus is not on positions but on serving the people,” he said.

Sim said as chairman, he will lead Penang DAP into the next state election and will fully support the party’s collective decision on candidates.

“If the party decides that I am to be a candidate, I will give my full commitment. If the party decides on another person, I will support that candidate wholeheartedly,” he said.

He stressed that the most important task for DAP was to retain the trust and confidence of Penangites.

“It is not about who becomes Chief Minister, who contests which seat or who holds what post. What matters is that we work hard to ensure the people of Penang continue to give us the mandate to govern,” he said.

He added that DAP must continue to demonstrate its ability to govern effectively and deliver on the aspirations of the rakyat in the next term.

“Our responsibility now is to continue serving and to earn the people’s trust for the next mandate,” he said.

In 2024, Sim was appointed as the new state DAP chairman, replacing Chow Kon Yeow, who had held the position since 1999.

The appointment was made after the state DAP election, which saw Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh secure first spot in the state party election with 1247 votes, and Sim came in second with 1237 votes.
