PUTRAJAYA: The government is not opposed to pig farming or pork consumption, but the rearing of such livestock should not take place in areas that could cause public concern, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar said communities should not be compelled to live near pig farms, which could lead to hygiene and pollution issues.
“I agree with the view that pig farming should not continue in areas that cause anxiety among residents. If necessary, consider relocating the pig farm to a more distant site.
“In terms of policy, we are not against pig farming or non-Muslims consuming pork. However, we do not want to force communities that do not wish to live near such farms,” said Anwar.
He said in his address at the assembly at the National Unity Ministry here on Monday morning (Feb 8).
Anwar also said he would have objected if a pig farm were built near his house in Sungai Long.
“I would disagree if there were a pig farm near my house. Not because I am against Chinese people eating pork, but because I just can’t stand the smell,” he said.
“The problems that arise from pig farms are real; these include issues such as odour, health, and sewerage.
“So, find a location based on consensus. If there is no suitable place in Kuala Lumpur, then there is none. If it is difficult in Selangor, then it is difficult. Don’t create problems,” added Anwar.
On Jan 10, Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah expressed disappointment and disagreement with the state government’s plan to allow pig farming operations in Tanjong Sepat, Kuala Langat, starting this year, before relocating them to Bukit Tagar in 2030.
On Jan 26, Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the state government had decided to halt the proposed pig farming project in Bukit Tagar following public objections.
On Jan 28, Amirudin said the proposed location for modern pig-farming facilities would be reevaluated to ensure it is sufficiently distant from residential areas.
