Cops hunt for MPV driver flashing siren on highway

PETALING JAYA: Police are looking for the driver of a multipurpose vehicle (MPV) caught on video activating a siren and flashing warning lights while travelling along a congested highway, sparking public outrage online.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the driver had violated the traffic law.

Rule 138(1) of the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Rules 1959 prohibits the installation of flashing warning lights on vehicles other than authorised emergency vehicles, he said.

The motorist can be charged under Section 119(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a fine of RM2,000 or up to six months’ jail if convicted.

ACP Mohd Zamzuri said police are also investigating the case under Section 170 of the Penal Code for elements of impersonating a public servant, an offence punishable with imprisonment, a fine, or both.

He also said that the police are checking the viral video for details of the MPV.

He urged the public with information related to the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation.

They can contact the Tun HS Lee Traffic Police Station at 03-2071 9999 or any nearby police station.

A one-minute-and-three-second video clip, which has been circulating since Wednesday, shows a white MPV activating a siren and warning lights resembling those used by police while navigating traffic, drawing criticism and questions from netizens over the owner’s actions.
