Malaysia will not compromise principled position on Palestine, says Deputy Foreign Minister

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will not compromise its principled position merely to be present at negotiation tables that do not guarantee genuine justice for Palestine and its people, says Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni.

The Deputy Foreign Minister said Malaysia would continue to utilise every available platform - including the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and Asean - to ensure that the voices of the Palestinian people are consistently heard on the international stage and to press for an urgent resolution to the conflict.

“Malaysia will remain steadfast with Palestine because their struggle is our struggle, and their victory will be a victory for humanity,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Feb 5).

Lukasnisman was responding to the Sharm El Sheikh summit in October 2025, stressing that Malaysia’s absence was not a diplomatic failure.

He explained that the US-Egypt organisers had only invited countries that offered full and immediate support for President Donald Trump’s peace plan.

“In explaining our position, Malaysia chose not to give immediate support as we took the approach of first assessing the plan to ensure the absolute rights of the Palestinian people, including an end to occupation and the establishment of an independent state,” he said.

Overall, through the Palestinian People’s Humanitarian Trust Fund (AAKRP), he said the government has channelled RM86mil since Oct 7, 2023 for various humanitarian and welfare missions for Palestinians, including the Ops Ihsan initiative.

Malaysia has also worked closely with countries such as Egypt and Jordan, as well as international non-governmental organisations, through airdrop missions and air bridge operations to ensure aid reaches those in need in Gaza, he said.

The government, he added, remains deeply concerned about reports of infectious disease risks among children who have missed immunisations, adding that Malaysia has provided medical assistance through various international bodies to help sustain healthcare services in Gaza and the West Bank.
