MACC remands 11 officers in Bintulu for alleged solicitation, bribery


KUCHING: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) remanded 11 enforcement officers in Bintulu for allegedly soliciting and receiving bribes totalling about RM239,000 for protecting and assisting the affairs of inmates.

Six suspects were remanded for four days until Friday (Feb 6) and four were remanded for five days until Saturday (Feb 7), while another suspect was remanded for three days until Thursday (Feb 5).

Magistrate Kasyfurrahman Abang Ahmad granted the remand orders on Tuesday (Feb 3) following applications by MACC at the Bintulu Magistrate's Court.

Sarawak MACC said all the male suspects, aged in their 20s to 40s, were arrested between 11.50am and 4pm on Monday (Feb 2) when they went to the Bintulu MACC office to have their statements recorded.

Initial investigations found that the alleged offences were committed from 2020 to 2025 by soliciting bribes from the inmates' family members.

The suspects allegedly received payments ranging from RM2,400 to RM45,000 through transfers into bank accounts belonging to their wives and intermediaries.

Sarawak MACC director Datuk Hasbilah Mohamad Salleh, who confirmed the arrests, said the case was being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act.
