Putatan district office urged to explain dumped official documents at Sabah beach

KOTA KINABALU: The Putatan district office should make public how government documents were found thrown indiscriminately by the beach in Putatan, says Putatan Umno chief Jeffery Nor Mohamed (pic).

He said that such government documents, if no longer needed, should be sent to the State Archive Department, which decides whether to keep or destroy them.

“It cannot be thrown or destroyed by the district office. The discovery of such documents at the beach raises questions among the public about whether anything was amiss, as some were project tenders for the district office.

“It is important for the Putatan district office to make its investigations public,” he said on Tuesday (Feb 3), following social media posts on Feb 1 showing official documents discarded along a beach area in Putatan.

Following the discovery, Putatan district officer Masawi Salleh said his office takes the matter seriously.

He said that internal investigations are underway, adding that all documents discarded at the site have been retrieved and properly secured.

On Feb 2, he said the Sabah State Archives conducted an inspection at the district office and that his office provided full cooperation.

Masawi said the internal probe was underway to determine the cause of the incident and assess compliance with record-management procedures.

“The district office has implemented temporary measures to prevent similar incidents. This includes reviewing and tightening procedures for managing and disposing of official records to ensure full compliance with regulations and guidelines,” he added.

“The Putatan District Office takes this matter seriously and is committed to improving governance and record management to uphold the integrity of public service,” Masawi said in the statement.
