GOMBAK: Police have brought back another member of the “Captain Praba” gang following cooperation with foreign law enforcement agencies, as investigations under Ops Jack Sparrow continue.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the suspect was arrested in Thailand and arrived in Malaysia at about 10.30pm on Saturday (Jan 31).
He added that the suspect, in his 30s, would be brought to court on Sunday (Feb 1) for a remand application.
Mohd Khalid said three other suspects linked to the syndicate had been extradited from Mumbai, India, in separate operations earlier.
The press conference followed the Inspector-General of Police’s visit to the Royal Malaysia Police’s “Thaneer Panthal” initiative at the Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple in Batu Caves.
Mohd Khalid said police currently have information on about 15 individuals believed to be involved in the syndicate, and have arrested a total of 17 suspects to date, including those extradited from India.
However, he said about 15 more suspects remain at large and are being actively tracked by police.
“In most cases, once enforcement action is taken, the suspects tend to flee, making arrests more challenging,” he said.
He stressed that international cooperation was crucial to tracking down and detaining fugitives, adding that foreign authorities would alert the Royal Malaysia Police when suspects are located for further action.
Earlier, the Criminal Investigation Department director, Comm Datuk M. Kumar, was reported as saying that Bukit Aman is seeking the remaining members of the notorious Captain Praba gang, including its mastermind, who are believed to have fled overseas.
He said police are intensifying efforts to dismantle the gang following a spate of violent crimes linked to its members.
The gang is known for turf wars with rival groups, as well as a series of high-profile crimes, including murder and arson, particularly in Klang and Banting in Selangor.
On Jan 28, three Captain Praba gang members were charged at the Sepang Sessions Court after being extradited from Mumbai, India.
The three men are listed on Interpol’s Red Notice.
