Over 158 tonnes of illegal e-waste seized at Port Klang

KLANG: More than 158 tonnes of illegal electronic waste and copper materials were seized during an integrated enforcement operation at Westports here on Jan 30.

The operation, conducted at about 5pm, involved inspections of nine containers and was led by Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency commander Deputy Comm Datuk Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal.

Director-general Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily said six containers were found carrying prohibited goods, including circuit boards, industrial fuses and copper materials categorised as electronic waste, which are banned imports under the Environmental Quality Act 1974.

“The seized items comprised five e-waste containers weighing a total of 127,867kg and one container of copper wire cables weighing 30,300kg, bringing the total weight of the seized goods to 158,167kg.

"The e-waste containers had been placed in a secured area pending instructions from the Environment Department for re-export procedures,” he said in a statement on Saturday (Jan 31).

He added that the entry of scheduled waste is strictly prohibited and the agency would continue to intensify inspections on containers suspected of carrying prohibited waste to strengthen border control.

“This is part of our ongoing commitment to safeguard national interests and preserve the sovereignty of the country,” he said.
