Animal welfare group calls for probe of dog's death in Pusing

IPOH: An animal welfare group is urging the authorities to investigate the death of a dog in Pusing, near Batu Gajah, after public outrage over videos of the alleged incident on social media.

Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia (SAFM) president R. Kalaivanan said he received a complaint accompanied by two video recordings linked to the matter.

According to him, the first video shows an unidentified individual carrying out actions believed to have caused serious injury to the dog.

"A second video shows a dog lying in a pool of blood and confirmed dead.

"Based on information received, no direct witness has lodged a police report to date.

"A report was made on Thursday (Jan 29), but the complainant was not an eyewitness and had obtained the information from third parties," he said in a statement on Friday (Jan 30).

Kalaivanan said the dog had initially been buried by local individuals but was later exhumed for further investigation.

"I hope any direct witnesses will come forward and lodge official reports with the police and Veterinary Services Department (DVS) to assist in investigations.

"A prompt, thorough and transparent probe must be carried out to establish the facts of the case," he said.

Earlier on Friday, Ipoh Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) president Ricky Soong said he had lodged a police report on the dog's death.

The incident was said to have occurred at around 5pm on Wednesday (Jan 28).

Soong said that a man had targeted a dog with a firecracker, apparently killing it.

Perak DVS veterinary officer Dr R Pravina Vathi said the dog's carcass had been exhumed and sent to the Veterinary Research Institute laboratory for a necropsy.
