Parliament gets RM21mil systems, security upgrades with more CCTV coverage

KUALA LUMPUR: The Parliament building here has received further upgrades to its conference and security systems to ensure it continues to serve the people for years to come.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi revealed that two projects under the ministry, one to upgrade the conference system and another its CCTV system, had been completed and were now operational.

He said the conference system upgrades involved installing a new backup conference system for both the Dewan Rakyat and the Dewan Negara.

Nanta said the backup system will allow either House the ability to continue its session even if the main conferencing system experiences disruptions or operational failures.

“This project was successfully installed and tested over the last 16 months, and cost a total of RM16.6mil.

“This reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing the capabilities of our Parliament to a world-class standard, comparable to other renowned parliaments globally,” he said in a speech at the handover ceremony of the project at Parliament on Thursday (Jan 29).

Nanta also unveiled upgrades to Parliament's CCTV system costing RM5.2mil and done over 12 months.

This includes installing new cameras in Parliament's main block, its multipurpose hall, and its daycare centre, and upgrading the main CCTV control room.

New cameras were also installed around the official residences of the Dewan Rakyat Speaker and Dewan Negara President.

Nanta said the CCTV system came with new smart features such as analytics functions, centralised control features, fast data retrieval, and image storage.

“This is aimed at enhancing security and monitoring of the entire parliament area and its strategic corners in real-time.

“Together, these two projects will ensure smooth parliamentary proceedings without technical interruptions while creating a more orderly and efficient debate environment for its lawmakers,” he added.

He also unveiled that additional upgrades to Parliament were still underway, with their official handover to be done in November this year, as part of the ministry's upgrade and rectification project for Parliament.

Attending the handover ceremony was Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul who thanked Nanta for ensuring the planned upgrades to Parliament were completed on time.

“I would like to express my thanks to the ministry and the Prime Minister’s Department for helping upgrade Parliament and ensuring that all our staff can comfortably carry out their duties,” he said in his speech at the ceremony.

Also in attendance at the ceremony was Dewan Negara president Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah.
