Foreman jailed, fined for assaulting and threatening wife

SEREMBAN: A 30-year-old foreman has been sentenced to 10 months' jail after pleading guilty to a charge of causing grievous hurt to his wife.

A. Anandakrishnan was also ordered to pay a RM2,000 fine in default four months' jail by Magistrate Nurul Farha Sulaiman here on Friday (Jan 16).

The accused was charged with committing the offence around 6am on Nov 9 at the couple's apartment in Seremban 2 near here.

He was charged under Section 325 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to seven years' jail and a fine upon conviction.

Magistrate Nurul Farha also sentenced him to six months in jail after he pleaded guilty to a charge of threatening his wife with a knife.

Anandakrishnan was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation which, among others, makes it an offence to threaten someone with death, serious injury, or destruction of property.

Offenders can be jailed for up to seven years or fined, or both, if found guilty.

He was charged with committing the offence at the same place and time.

The Magistrate ordered the jail terms to begin from the day of his arrest.

According to the facts of the case, the accused went to his wife's room and hit her several times in the face.

He also threatened to kill her if she left their unit without his approval.

When he went to sleep, his wife called her mother, who then took her to Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar (HTJ) for treatment.

When the accused came to know that the victim was at HTJ, he went there and threatened to stab her when she came out.

In mitigation, his lawyer YY Ng pleaded for a minimal jail sentence as the accused had saved the court's time by pleading guilty.

She said the accused earned RM1,800 a month and had to provide for the couple's two young children and his sickly mother.

Deputy public prosecutor P. Rubini requested a sentence commensurate with the seriousness of the offence.
