PETALING JAYA: Selangor's Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has decreed for firm action to be taken against any activities in the state with lesbian, gay, bisexual transgender (LGBT) elements.
In a joint statement on Monday (Jan 12), Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) chairman Datuk Salehuddin Saidin and Selangor Mufti Datuk Dr Anhar Opir said the Selangor Ruler expressed strong opposition towards any deviant activities related to LGBT.
"The Sultan of Selangor does not consent to any form of festivals, parades, activities, celebrations or promotions of the deviant LGBT lifestyle in any district within the state."
"His Royal Highness does not consent to the establishment of any associations, clubs, organisations or NGOs related to LGBT in the state of Selangor," read the statement.
It added that any effort to promote or legalise a deviant LGBT lifestyle goes against Islamic teachings.
"LGBT-related activities invite the normalisation of such practices and pose a threat to the faith (aqidah) of Muslims," they said.
The statement was issued after the Sultan Sharafuddin had an audience with Salehuddin and Anhar on Monday in relation to the "Glamping with Pride" event that was scheduled to take place on Jan 17 and Jan 18 in Hulu Langat.
Following the ruler's decree, MAIS and the Selangor Mufti urged the police and local authorities not to issue permits for the event or any similar programmes.
"The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais), local authorities and the police are urged to remain vigilant and take firm legal action to ensure that such activities are not organised," they said.
MAIS and the Selangor Mufti also called for the commitment of all parties to safeguard the sanctity of Islam and ensure that the state remains harmonious and free from any deviant practices.
It was previously reported that the programme would proceed despite objections from various parties.
The programme is organised by a group known as Jejaka and is described as a community-based retreat focusing on well-being, peer support and health awareness.
On Jan 10, Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Naazron Abdul Yusof said five police reports had been lodged over the event.
