SHAH ALAM: Selangor police have denied claims that its personnel escorted a vehicle used by cable thieves in Kampung Tasik Tambahan, Ampang, on Saturday (Sept 19).
Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the personnel sent to the location were carrying out their duties after receiving information about the activity.
He said checks showed that the patrol team managed to arrest one suspect, while several others believed to be his accomplices fled the scene.
However, he said the angle of the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of the incident may have created the impression that police personnel were escorting the activity.
“There was no controversy. The patrol personnel were carrying out their duties, and we have arrested one suspect.
“Investigations were conducted, and the suspect was charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code and fined RM8,000,” he said at a press conference on Wednesday (Sept 23).
He said the group was believed to have been active since early this year.
Meanwhile, police are still investigating to identify the suspect’s accomplices who fled, including whether the group was linked to other cases.
On the house owner who had CCTV footage of the incident, Comm Shazeli said police would conduct further investigations.
However, the homeowner’s statement had yet to be recorded as police were currently focusing on tracking down the suspects still at large.
“For now, we are focusing on tracking down the suspects who are still at large first,” he said.
Previously, CCTV footage from a house near the scene went viral on several social media platforms.
