Giant Panda Conservation Centre now open to the public


SELANGOR: Zoo Negara’s Giant Panda Conservation Centre (GPCC) is now open to the public, after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officated at the launch on Saturday (Jan 10).

A GPCC staffer said that only 50 visitors would be allowed every five minutes to visit the two giant pandas Chen Xing (male) and Xiao Yue (female) who came to Malaysia on Nov 18.

“There will be caretakers who will monitor and control the crowd and usher them out once the five minutes is over,” he said while adding that visitors should adhere to other basic rules.

“Today it will be open until 4.30pm, tomorrow (Sunday (Jan 11)), the opening time will be as usual in the morning,” he added.

Crowds have been seen gathering and waiting outside GPCC eagerly waiting for the gates to be opened and meet the pandas.

Earlier Saturday, the Prime Minister made his first official visit to meet the pandas.

During his press conference, he said there will be an additional RM5mil allocation, which he had approved, for the improvement of facilities in the zoo.

“They have shown a good reputation in preserving the zoo and making it child and visitor friendly," he said.

Last year, about RM5mil was also given by the government to the zoo to improve facilities, when the two giant pandas came in Nov 18.
