PAS won't be part of Perlis govt, Hadi stresses

PETALING JAYA: PAS will reject any overtures to join the Perlis government, says Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.

"We have decided not to accept any positions even if we are invited because of the attempt to bring down the state government," the PAS president told a press conference recently.

The Perlis government is now led by Bersatu's Kuala Perlis assemblyman Abu Bakar Hamzah as Mentri Besar, with four other members of the party forming the state executive council.

Former mentri besar Mohd Shukri Ramli resigned in December, citing health reasons.

His resignation also followed the submission of eight statutory declarations (SDs) by state assemblymen – three from PAS and five from Bersatu – retracting their support for him.

PAS assemblymen Saad Seman (Chuping), Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong) and Mohd Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji) were later sacked from the party.

It has also been decided that the three seats would remain vacant as the next state elections would be held in two years.

On a PAS candidate for the Perikatan Nasional chairman's post, Hadi said the party has yet to decide.

"Not yet, no names yet.

"I leave it to the national leadership to choose the candidate to lead Perikatan," he said, adding that PAS would have a federal meeting next week.

"It does not have to be me, (but) I'm willing to help whoever is selected to become the chairman," he said.

Hadi, who is Marang MP, had earlier this month shot down talks of him leading Perikatan, citing his poor health.

Last month, Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced that he was stepping down as coalition chairman effective Jan 1.

Separately, Hadi said he has no qualms about Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's proposal to limit the premiership's term to not more than 10 years.

"In Islam, as long as someone is eligible, can perform his duties and provide service, it's okay.

"Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is already 100 years old and can still be of service," he said.
