Sabah's Tenom district declared a flood disaster zone

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s interior district of Tenom has been declared a flood disaster district, making it the fourth district to be hit by floods following heavy rains over the weekend.

Tenom district officer Alexander Liew, who is also the District Disaster Management Committee chairman, made the declaration at 3pm on Monday (Jan 5) following reports of rising water and landslides.

No immediate evacuations were reported in Tenom, though authorities expected to open relief centres in preparation for evacuations as rising waters along the Padas River affected about seven kampungs.

The flood-prone Beaufort district, as well as the Kota Kinabalu City and Kota Belud districts, were hit by the weekend rains as of 4pm on Monday (Jan 5).

Intermittent heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue.
