New Year celebrations waste down 11% to 3.2 tonnes

KUALA LUMPUR: Alam Flora Sdn Bhd collected approximately 3.2 tonnes of waste from three areas in Kuala Lumpur during the New Year’s Eve celebrations, 11% less than the 3.6 tonnes collected in 2025.

Its chief executive officer, Shariman Yusuf Mohamed Zain, said the cleanup operation targeted high-traffic public areas, including Bukit Bintang, Dataran Merdeka and the vicinity of the Petronas Twin Towers (KLCC), from 10pm on New Year’s Eve until 8am yesterday, ensuring the city was restored to a clean and welcoming state at the start of the new year.

“KLCC recorded the highest amount of waste at 1.4 tonnes, followed by Bukit Bintang (one tonne) and Dataran Merdeka (0.8 tonnes),” he said in a statement yesterday, adding that 152 personnel, including management staff, pre-cleaning teams, drivers, and general crew were involved in the operation.

A total of 36 660-litre and 25 240-litre mobile garbage bins were strategically placed to facilitate proper waste disposal, Bernama reported.

Three compactor trucks were deployed for efficient waste collection and water jets were used to wash pavements, particularly in high-footfall areas, he said.

He also noted that this year’s waste collection was relatively manageable, especially at Bukit Bintang.

“Crowd sizes at each location may vary depending on public preferences for celebration spots. Nevertheless, our teams remain fully prepared to manage waste collection efficiently, regardless of turnout,” Shariman Yusuf said, stressing Alam Flora’s ongoing dedication to environmental sustainability and urban cleanliness, aligning with the company’s mission to enhance community well-being and contribute to a greener future.
