Thunderstorm, heavy rain warning issued for nine states until 10pm


PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning for thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds in nine states until 10pm Tuesday (Sept 15).

MetMalaysia, in a warning issued at 7.40pm, said the affected areas in Kedah are Kulim, Baling, Sik and Bandar Baharu, while in Penang they include Seberang Perai Utara, Seberang Perai Selatan and Seberang Perai Tengah.

The same warning was issued for Perak in Kerian, Larut Matang, Selama, Kuala Kangsar, Kinta, Perak Tengah, Manjung, Hilir Perak, Kampar, Bagan Datuk, Muallim and Batang Padang.

In Pahang, the areas affected include Bera, Rompin and Pekan, while the affected locations in Selangor are Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Hulu Langat.

Other affected areas include Jelebu and Jempol in Negri Sembilan as well as Segamat, Kluang and Mersing in Johor.

In Sarawak, the affected areas are Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Kapit (Song and Kapit), Bintulu (Tatau), Sarikei (Julau), Betong (Betong), Miri (Subis and Marudi), and Limbang.

In Sabah, the warning covers Tawau (Kalabakan, Kunak, Tawau and Lahad Datu) and Sandakan (Sandakan, Labuk & Sugut, Paitan and Kinabatangan).

A warning is issued when there are indications of thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that are imminent or expected to persist for more than one hour.

Thunderstorm warnings are short-term alerts, valid for no more than six hours from the time of issuance.
