Surveyor charged with murdering mum and adopted sister


BUTTERWORTH: A surveyor has been charged with killing his mother and adopted sister in a house fire earlier this month.

No plea was recorded from Daniel Qayyum Kamalrolzlan, 23, after the charge was read to him before Magistrate Balqis Roslin here on Friday (Dec 26) as murder charges fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court, Sinar Harian reports.

Daniel Quyyum, clad in a blue T-shirt, nodded that he understood the charges.

On the first charge, he is alleged to have murdered Hayani Yaakob, 51, at their house in Lorong Nakhoda 5, Taman Teluk Air Tawar, at about 9.45am on Dec 10.

On the second charge, he is alleged to have murdered a six-year-old girl in the same house at the same date and time.

He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries the death penalty, or between 30 and 40 years' jail with at least 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Nor Idayu Yusoff said no bail was offered.

She requested a mention date for the submission of the post-mortem report.

Daniel Quyyum was unrepresented.

"No bail will be offered," Balqis told the accused.

She then fixed Jan 29 for mention of the case.

In the Dec 10 incident, Hayani and her adopted daughter, known only as Andra, were burnt to death when their rented house caught fire.

Their charred remains were found side by side near the main door.

Daniel Quyyum was injured after part of the roof collapsed on him during the fire.

When met outside the court, his father Kamalrolzlan Muhammad, 57, said he has yet to claim his ex-wife and adopted daughter's remains for burial pending DNA test results.

"I was told it would take about three months," he said.
