Man involved in fire that killed mother and child to be charged tomorrow


GEORGE TOWN: A man who was remanded to assist in the investigation into the death of his biological mother and adopted sister in a fire at a rented residence in Taman Rathna, Telok Air Tawar on Dec 10 will be charged on Friday (Dec 26).

Penang Police Chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said the man would be charged at the Butterworth Court in connection with the case, reported Sinar Harian.

"Yes, he will be charged tomorrow at the Butterworth Court," he said when contacted on Thursday (Dec 25).

On Dec 10, a woman and her adopted child were tragically found burnt to death following a fire at their rented house. Another individual was injured in the incident. The fire occurred at 9.41am and involved a class A semi-detached house, which sustained approximately 85% damage.

In addition to the two deceased victims, a 20-year-old male was rescued from the scene. He was located near the kitchen door at 10:21am and was receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Seberang Jaya Hospital.

The two victims who lost their lives have been identified as Hayani Yaakob, 50, and her five-year-old adopted son, Andra. Their bodies were discovered in the living room near the main exit at 10.59am.

Firefighters controlled the blaze by 10.15am and fully extinguished it by 11.21am.
