Due process must take place, says Khaled on money laundering allegations against military officer

KUALA LUMPUR: The Defence Ministry fully respects the legal process that will be carried out in connection with a police report lodged over a money laundering case allegedly involving a senior military officer, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin (pic).

The Defence Minister said the ministry is aware that the police report was lodged.

"We fully respect the legal processes that will be carried out and we are committed to upholding the rule of law and the principles of justice," he said in a statement on Monday (Dec 22).

He also urged the public not to speculate, make accusations or pass judgment until investigations are completed and relevant authorities announce official findings.

"We will await the outcome of the formal investigation before issuing any further statements or taking subsequent action, in accordance with prevailing legal provisions," he added.

Activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin, better known as Chegubard, had lodged a report at the Dang Wangi police headquarters here on Monday against an Armed Forces senior officer over alleged money laundering.

Chegubard claimed he possessed a financial forensic report involving the individual's bank accounts.

He alleged that the documents indicate a regular inflow of large sums of money with several transactions reaching hundreds of thousands of ringgit.

He said the report would be submitted to the police under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

Chegubard also called on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate the matter.
