Give authorities space to probe report of animal neglect at PJ clinic, says vets group

PETALING JAYA: Any allegation involving animal neglect is viewed with utmost seriousness, says the Malaysian Small Animal Veterinary Association (MSAVA).

It said it took note of recent media reports alleging animal neglect at an abandoned veterinary clinic in Damansara Damai here.

MSAVA said it strongly upholds fundamental principles related to animal welfare and the ethical responsibilities of the veterinary profession.

"At this stage, MSAVA wishes to emphasise the importance of allowing the relevant authorities to conduct a proper and thorough investigation in accordance with existing laws and regulatory frameworks.

"We trust that due process will be followed in addressing this matter," it said in a statement on Thursday (Dec 18).

MSAVA added that it was essential for conclusions to be based on verified facts, with any necessary actions taken through the appropriate legal and professional channels.

The association said it has formally communicated its concerns to the relevant authorities and is awaiting the outcome of the investigation.

It also reiterated its commitment to promoting high standards of veterinary professionalism, accountability and animal welfare, adding that it would continue working with regulatory bodies and its members to safeguard public trust in the veterinary profession.

On Wednesday (Dec 17), the Stray Animal Foundation Malaysia (SAFM) said it was horrified that one dog and a cat had been found dead in a cage in the shuttered clinic, with another cat barely alive.

The association said it believed the animals were abandoned and left to starve.

"A police report was filed on Saturday (Dec 13) by former workers of the clinic, and this tragedy demands immediate, thorough, and decisive action from the authorities," SAFM said.
