Take action against those responsible for abandoning animals at shuttered vet clinic, says SAFM

PETALING JAYA: The Stray Animal Foundation Malaysia (SAFM) is calling for an immediate investigation into an abandoned veterinary clinic in Damansara Damai, following the discovery of neglected animals there.

In a statement on Wednesday (Dec 17), SAFM said they were horrified that one dog and a cat had been found dead in a cage, with another cat barely surviving.

The association said that the animals have been found abandoned and left to starve.

"Only one cat survived and is currently receiving treatment at another veterinary clinic.

"A police report was filed last Saturday by former workers of the clinic, and this tragedy demands immediate, thorough, and decisive action from the authorities," SAFM said.

The foundation said those responsible for abandoning the animals in a clinic no longer operating must be held accountable.

"This neglect is a blatant violation of the legal and moral responsibilities owed to the animals under their care," they added.

The group had called for the Veterinary Services Department and the police to investigate the matter under Section 29 of the Animal Welfare Act.

"The responsible veterinary staff and clinic management must be fully held accountable for this act of cruelty, and we call for swift legal action to ensure justice is served.

"Under Section 29, those found guilty of neglecting animals and allowing them to suffer face serious consequences, including heavy fines and imprisonment," they said.

SAFM also called for immediate action to prevent such incidents.

"This incident is a stark reminder of the urgent need for strict enforcement of animal welfare laws in Malaysia.

"All veterinary clinics adhere to the highest standards of care and responsibility," they said.

"The abuse and abandonment of animals in this manner cannot be allowed to continue.
