Evacuation efforts underway as flooding hits two villages in Johor

MERSING: Thirty residents from two villages were evacuated to a temporary relief centre in Endau, near here, after their areas were hit by flooding.

Endau Fire and Rescue Station assistant chief Mohd Alias Husin said the evacuation began at midnight on Wednesday (Dec 17) after continuous rain in the area.

“They are currently being placed at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pusat Air Tawar, which was opened as an evacuation centre at 5am today,’’ he said in a statement on Wednesday.

Mohd Alias said the victims were from 10 families in Kampung Baru Air Tawar and Kampung Hubong.

He said there were two baby girls, two baby boys, five boys, five girls, six adult men, seven adult women, two male senior citizens and a female senior citizen.

“We are monitoring the situation right now with other relevant agencies as it continues to rain,’’ Mohd Alias said, adding that all roads leading to the Mersing district are still accessible right now.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued continuous heavy rain and thunderstorm warnings in Segamat, Kluang, Mersing and Kota Tinggi until Thursday (Dec 18).
