A MAN in India who tried to cover up his wife’s death from a botched home abortion was arrested after his in-laws became suspicious, Malaysia Nanban reported.

Ramya and Kannan from Tamil Nadu were married eight years ago and have two daughters.

When Ramya became pregnant again, Kannan arranged a gender identification scan with the help of a female broker and a nurse because he did not want another girl.

Procedures for identifying the gender of unborn foetuses are illegal in India.

After learning the third child was also a girl, Kannan arranged a home abortion with the help of the same two women.

During the procedure Ramya suffered excessive blood loss and was rushed to a hospital. She died soon after.

Kannan apparently told his wife’s family that she died after a fall down the stairs.

However, the family did not believe the story and filed a police report.
