Malaysia's first utility-scale wind turbine project in Sabah to start soon

KOTA KINABALU: The nation’s first-ever utility-scale wind turbine project set to embark soon in the northern region of Sabah is proceeding as planned, said the Sabah Energy Corporation (SEC) Sdn Bhd.

SEC Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Adzmir Abd Rahman said these are some of the company’s major projects planned which would define shifts for the state’s energy future.

With that, and many other projects in the pipeline, the SEC would continue to need the cooperation from media practitioners in informing the public with clarity and responsibility, he said.

“Over the past year, you have provided balanced coverage of the SEC’s major projects such as the Ulu Padas Hydroelectric Project, which will become a key pillar in strengthening Sabah’s renewable energy landscape.

“Soon, we will also embark on another historic milestone, Malaysia’s first-ever utility-scale wind turbine project in the northern region of Sabah. These are not small steps and your role in informing the public with clarity and responsibility cannot be overstated,” said Adzmir.

“As the SEC continues to move forward, expanding renewable energy, strengthening grid resilience, and building a more sustainable Sabah, we are committed to ensuring open, transparent, and constructive communication with the media,” he said.

He said when information is shared responsibly, the public is empowered; when facts prevail over noise, trust is strengthened; and when institutions and media walk in the same direction, the state moves forward with confidence.

“We in the SEC recognise the critical role the media plays, especially in a landscape where accuracy is expected, fairness is demanded, and credibility is earned,” Adzmir said.

He said they appreciated the professionalism the media uphold when reporting on impactful issues.

He mentioned that the SEC had also been a steady supporter of the annual Kinabalu Press Awards because they believed excellence deserves recognition.

In July, SEC chairman Datuk Annuar Ayub said that as the state’s primary natural gas supplier, it currently powers 86% of Sabah’s electricity demand, serving residential consumers while fuelling the region’s industrial growth.

He announced that revenues from SEC’s gas operations were being reinvested into large-scale renewable energy initiatives.

These included a 15MW solar power facility in Tuaran, a 187.5 MW hydroelectric project in Ulu Padas, Tenom and a pioneering 100MW wind farm in Kudat (Phase 1).
