KLANG: Two people, including an eight-year-old boy, were killed after a three-storey shoplot caught fire in Jalan Batu Unjur 9, Taman Bayu Perdana, here on Wednesday (Aug 12).
The victims, a 66-year-old man and the boy, were found in separate toilets on the second floor of the building at about 6.33pm, after firefighters managed to put out the blaze.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Ashrul Riezal Asbar said both victims were pronounced dead at the scene by Health Ministry personnel.
“The victims were believed to have been trapped inside the toilets. Two other victims suffering from breathing difficulties were rescued by members of the public and taken to Klang Hospital for treatment,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.
Ashrul Riezal said the fire involved the second floor of the three-storey shoplot, with about 90% of an area measuring 20ft by 70ft affected.
He said firefighters from the Port Klang Fire and Rescue Station, assisted by personnel from the Andalas station, were dispatched to the scene after receiving the distress call at 5.51pm.
“Firefighters arrived at about 5.59pm and found the fire raging on the second floor. Initial information indicated that two people were trapped inside,” he said.
The two victims, an uncle and his nephew, were later handed over to the police forensic unit at about 10.15pm.
Ashrul Riezal said the department's forensic team, together with its K9 unit, also conducted an initial investigation at the scene.
“The premises have since been handed over to the department’s fire investigation team for further action,” he said.
The operation ended at 10.05pm, involving 18 firefighters and two fire rescue tenders, two water tankers and an Emergency Medical Rescue Service vehicle.
