KUALA LUMPUR: A lorry driver is believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel before losing control of his trailer and crashing onto the left road shoulder along Jalan Istana early Wednesday (Aug 12).
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the 4.30am incident occurred as the trailer was travelling from the city centre towards Jalan Damansara.
“Initial investigations found that the 50-year-old driver was negotiating a bend in the second lane when he is believed to have fallen asleep, causing him to lose control of the trailer before it skidded onto the left road shoulder,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.
ACP Mohd Zamzuri said no other vehicles or road users were involved in the accident. However, the driver suffered a fracture to his left arm and was treated as an outpatient.
Meanwhile, the trailer, which was carrying frozen chicken from Penang to Sungai Besi, sustained damage to its windscreen, lights, front left bumper and left-side door.
He said a breathalyser test using an SD2+ device recorded a reading of 0mg/100ml.
“Blood samples were also taken from the driver for toxicology testing,” he said.
“Police have inspected the accident scene and photographed the damage to the trailer,” he said.
ACP Mohd Zamzuri said police would record the driver's statement and obtain closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the surrounding area to assist investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
