KOTA KINABALU: Sabah mourns the loss of Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, a leader described as fearless, uncompromising and unafraid to speak his mind, traits that made him one of the most recognisable figures in the state’s political arena.
State leaders paid tribute to the veteran politician, many recalling not only his fiery presence in Parliament but also his relentless commitment to the communities he represented in the state’s interior.
Sabah Governor Tun Musa Aman said Bung Moktar’s absence would be deeply felt, adding that he gave immense service to the state.
“His dedication and efforts will continue to be remembered by the people,” the former chief minister said, extending condolences to Bung Moktar’s family.
Bung Moktar, 66, passed away early yesterday at a private hospital in Kota Kinabalu due to complications from a severe lung infection and kidney failure.
He won the Lamag state seat in the Nov 29 state polls.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor paid his last respects to Bung Moktar during a visit to Idang Residence in Luyang.
He said Bung Moktar was a leader who contributed significantly to Sabah.
“As a long-time friend, I am deeply saddened and have been thinking of him often, especially during his recent illness.
“On behalf of my family and the state government, I extend my sympathies to the family of the late Bung Moktar. May Allah bless his soul and place him among the righteous,” Hajiji said.
Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup said the loss was hard for many who watched Bung Moktar fight tirelessly for his constituency.
“His leadership was significant. His firmness and courage in championing the rights of the people will never be forgotten,” said Kurup who is also Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah president.
